Five Minute Friday – COLD

I’m joining the link-up with the Five Minute Friday freewrite on the word prompt, COLD. If you’re not familiar with this, you set a timer for 5 minutes and write on the week’s topic. Once the timer is done, you stop. Enjoy!

All week long the weather here in upstate New York has been absolutely frigid in my opinion.  But this morning I woke up to negative 4 degree weather. Brrrr doesn’t seem to begin to describe how it feels. And I know there’s other people out there in other frigid land temps going, “Girl, negative 4 ain’t nothing. Here, hold my icicle.” But this isn’t a contest. Cold is cold! I have no idea what the reasoning is behind any kind of negative degree weather. The only time I like to be cold is when I’m sleeping. Well, I personally don’t like to be cold. I more mean, I like the room to be cold. But I can’t have the room be cold in negative 4 degree weather. The house has been in a constant state of no thermostat touching. No turning it down at night so my room can be cooler. And in no way am I opening my window.

And then there’s my dog, Moose. Even though it’s been particularly freezy here, if the sun is shining, my dog wants to be outside. He wants to sit on the cold concrete slab that I call my front stoop and soak up his vitamin D.

Meanwhile, I’m over here dialing the miser brothers and asking them to chill out. Get it, chill out? Ha! While I don’t know the reason for negative degree weather, I do know that some of the pictures I’ve seen of the frozen tundra from around the country are some of the most spectacular pictures I’ve seen. It’s amazing to me how intricate the detail is on each snowflake. It’s amazing to me how ice sculptures appear out of cold air and form on immovable objects.

Obviously, I’m no scientist and I could probably google how these outside ice sculptures actually come about, but I’d rather just drink in the beauty that Mother Nature no matter the season seems to create. Is it any wonder that even in the coldest of seasons, the Creator of the universe can still bring beauty from icicles? I am amazed.

  1. I have also enjoyed the pictures of the snow and ice formations–and video clips of dogs running in the snow, sliding down hills.

  2. It is amazing how each season brings its own beauty.

  5. “hold my icicle” – LOL I love it!

Blue sky above sparkling white snow, deer dancing across the snowy fields, snowflakes and snowdrifts and icy landscapes – all beautiful sights I have truly enjoyed and marveled at this past week, even while shivering and aching from the cold. Love your perspective of seeing the beauty.
